Vidal Joseph

The French viticulture expert Professor Joseph Vidal (1905-1985) came from a family of winegrowers and entered the University of Montpellier in 1923. In 1928, he became director of plant protection in Oujda (Morocco). In 1946 he founded the Moroccan Agricultural School in Meknes, where he also held the chair of viticulture as director. In 1957 he returned to Roussillon, where he founded and directed the Roussillon Technical Wine Institute. Worth mentioning are his works "Viticulture in Morocco" (1951), with a description of Moroccan grape varieties, and "Viticulture in Roussillon" (1959), where history, culture, vine diseases and wine production are treated. Joseph Vidal also carried out research into vine deficiency diseases, which he himself discovered in some varieties. He was also a renowned entomologist at the University of Montpellier.
