Vidal Jean-Louis

The French vine breeder Jean-Louis Vidal (1880-1976) was active in the Cognac region of Charente during the 1930s and 1940s. He created over 50 new varieties, which were usually named after him followed by a running number. Mainly, these were hybrids from crossings of European with American vines. Most were grape varieties for wine production, but also some rootstocks. His most successful new varieties were Rami (Vidal 119), Select (Vidal 100 T), and Vidal Blanc (Vidal 256). He also authored several books, including "Les Maladies de la vigne, comment on les reconnaît et comment on les combat" (Grape Diseases, how to recognize and combat them) in 1944 and "La Viticulture méthodique et pratique" (Methodical and Practical Viticulture) in 1947.
