The French viticulture expert Victor Pulliat (1827-1896) was born at the "Domaine de Tempéré" vineyard in Chiroubles (Beaujolais). Inspired by a book by Alexandre Pierre Odart (1778-1866), he began collecting various grape varieties from around the world, resulting in a collection of over a thousand pieces over time. Together with Alphonse Mas, he founded the specialized magazine "Le Vignoble" (The Vineyard), which was published from 1874 to 1880. In 1869, he established the viticulture society of Lyon and focused primarily on combating the phylloxera, which was causing devastating damage in his home region of Beaujolais at that time, and whose control was still unresolved.
