The French viticulturalist Victor Pulliat (1827-1896) was born at the Domaine de Tempéré in Chiroubles (Beaujolais). Inspired by a book by Alexandre Pierre Odart (1778-1866), he began to collect different grape varieties from all over the world, which in the course of time resulted in a stock of over a thousand. With Alphonse Mas, he founded the trade journal "Le Vignoble" (The Vineyard), which was published from 1874 to 1880. In 1869 he founded the Lyon Viticultural Society and devoted himself above all to combating phylloxera, which at that time was causing devastating damage in his home region of Beaujolais and the fight against it was still unresolved.
