Vermont

The state in the north-east of the USA with the capital Montpelier covers 24,923 km² and is one of the New England states. It borders Canada (province of Québec) to the north, New Hampshire to the east (separated by the Connecticut River), Massachusetts to the south and New York to the west (separated by Lake Champlain). Vermont was admitted to the Union in 1791 as the 14th state.

History

Viticulture in Vermont began on a small scale in the 19th century, primarily with native vines and hybrids. National Prohibition (1920-1933) brought viticulture to an almost complete standstill. Modern viticulture developed from the 1990s onwards with the cultivation of new, extremely frost-hardy varieties, including many breeds by US vine breeder Elmer Swenson (1913-2004) and universities in the upper Midwest. The founding of Snow Farm Vineyard & Winery in 1997 is considered the beginning of modern viticulture.
