Vermentino Nero

The red grape variety (also Vermentina Nera) comes from Italy. The origin (parentage) is unknown; it may be a mutation of the white variety Vermentino. The medium-late ripening vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It produces spicy red wines with black fruit aromas. The variety was abandoned in the late 1940s and then saved from extinction in the 1980s. It is grown in Tuscany in some provinces, where it is permitted in the DOC wines Candia dei Colli Apuani and Colline Lucchesi. The area under cultivation is 124 hectares. There is also a tiny stand of 0.2 hectares in South Africa. In 2016, 124 hectares of vines were designated (Kym Anderson).
