The first reference to South Tyrolean sparkling wine dates back to 1902, when the champagne winery in Eppan produced it from Riesling grapes. However, the annexation of South Tyrol to Italy after the First World War in 1919 led to a general wine crisis and a standstill in sparkling wine production. Production did not restart until the early 1960s.
In 1990, the South Tyrolean sparkling wine producers joined forces. The 11 member companies are Arunda, Sekt- & Weinkellerei Braunbach, Weingut Haderburg, Cantina Kaltern, Wein- und Sektkellerei Kettmair, Kellerei Kurtatsch, Kellerei Meran, Sektkellerei Lorenz Martini Comitissa, Kellerei St. Pauls (Praeclarus), Pfitscher and Peter Sölva.
