The Italian composer Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (1813-1901), who became famous above all for his operas, was born in Parma in Emilia-Romagna.
He was a great wine lover and especially loved first-class Chianti, which he declared to be not only his favourite wine but also his medicine.
On his second trip to Russia in 1862, accompanied by his second wife, he took a few cases of it with him, but in the unheated luggage wagon all the bottles froze to death.
He also appreciated Lambrusco wines and Asti Spumante. See also under Celebrity Wineries & Wines.
