The white grape variety comes from Italy; the name means "green". Synonyms are Colombana, Colombana Bianca, Colombana di Picciolli, Doree d'Italia, Doree d'Italie, Paradisa, Paradisa di Bologne, Paradisiotto, Paradizia, San Colombano, San Colombano Paradiso d'Italia, Vardea, Verdecana, Verdesa di Montalto and Verdicchio Giallo, the parentage (parentage) is unknown. It must not be confused with the variety Besgano Bianco (synonym Colombana Bianca) or Verdeca, even though synonyms may seem to indicate it. There is also no connection with the traditional wine Verdea from the Greek island Zakynthos. The traditional old variety was already mentioned in 1303 by the author Petrus de Crescentiis (1230-1320), and at the end of the 16th century in a work by the agronomist Giovanni Soderini (1526-1596) as "vitigno apprezzatissimo" (much appreciated grape variety). The vine is resistant to botrytis. It is cultivated mainly in Lombardy, as well as in Emilia-Romagna in the area of Colli Piacentini and under the name Colombana Bianca in Tuscany. In 2016, 39 hectares of vineyard area were declared with a decreasing tendency (statistics Kym Anderson).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
