Various vine diseases that are characterised by similar symptoms and effects on the growth of the vines, especially the leaves, are referred to as yellowing diseases. However, they differ mainly in terms of the pathogens that cause the disease. The causative agents are special phytoplasmas (cell wall-less bacteria).
In the narrower sense, flavescence dorée (FD, golden yellowing) and blackwood disease (stolbur, bois noir) are referred to as yellowing diseases. Later, the yellowing diseases grapevine yellows (Italy, North America, Israel), Australian grapevine yellows (Australia) as well as leaf curl, berry shrivel (US state of New York) and a special form of flavescence doré of the Pfalz type (FD-Pfalz) were also found.
The phytoplasmas are transmitted by cicada species that suck on the bast part of the vascular tissue. The symptoms can hardly be distinguished from each other and therefore cannot be used to identify the pathogen. However, the spread of the disease varies. The common symptoms:...
