The winery is located in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedès in the Spanish DO region of Penedès(Catalonia). It was founded in 1865 by Francisco José Doménech and is named after an old church called "Santa Maria de Vallformosa". The name means "beautiful valley". The Spanish King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941) visited the estate in 1904 and in 2000 the company was certified according to ISO 9001. The vineyards cover 397 hectares of vines in the El Maset, Mas Baltá, Mas Caballé, Masía Can Colomer, Mas Granell, Masía Freyé, Mas La Roca, Masía La Sala and Vallfort vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, Muscat Blanc, Parellada and Xarello, as well as the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta, Monastrell, Samsó(Mazuelo), Syrah and Tempranillo. The wines are produced in the Selection, Noble, Traditional, MVSA and Gran Barón lines. There are 2,500 barrique barrels available for ageing. Cava (sparkling wine) is also produced on a large scale in the five lines. The Brut is one of the most highly-awarded cavas in Spain. Wines from the DO areas of Catalunya and Rioja (Primum Vitae Crianza and Reserva) are also produced.
