This red grape variety is a new cross between Castelão Francês x Alicante Henri Bouschet. The cross was made in Portugal in 1948 by José Leão Ferreira da Almeida. Incidentally, the same parents also produced the Tintem variety. It is cultivated in the Centro region. In 2016, 162 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
