One of the six major regional IGP areas for the production of local wines in France. The other five are Atlantique, Comtés Rhodaniens, Comté Tolosan, Méditerranée and Pays d'Oc. It covers the entire Loire wine growing region along the river and ten tributaries. Until 2007, the former Vin de pays area was called Jardin de la France, in German "Garten Frankreichs" (Garden of France), referring to the beautiful landscape along the river with its many picturesque Loire castles. The vineyards cover around 70,000 hectares of vines. There are over 30 AOC areas in this large area.
