The Italian wine expert Giuseppe Vaccarini (*1952) was and is active in many areas of the industry. He began his career as a professional sommelier in 1972 and won the title of "Best Sommelier of the World" in 1978. From 1978 to 1983 he was director of the Milanese restaurant "Gualtiero Marchesi", has been a teacher at the sommelier school "Istituto Alberghiero Carlo Porta" since 1987 and has taught special courses at the Milanese universities "Bocconi" and "Cattolica". Vaccarini also works as a consultant for companies in the food industry.

Vaccarini has authored numerous publications in many specialised magazines and books on wine and food. He has been a technical board member and president of the jury for various national and international sommelier competitions since 1986. From 1999 to 2002 he was President of the Association of Italian Sommeliers (AIS) and from 1996 to 2004 President of the "Association de la Sommellerie Internationale" (ASI). In 2007, Vaccarini founded the Italian Sommelier Association "Associazione della Sommellerie Professionale Italiana" (ASPI) and acts as its director. This is where Italy's professional sommeliers are selected for competitions.
