The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Montanara, Tosca and Tosco. It should not be confused with the Sangiovese variety (with synonym Uva Tosca), despite seemingly suggestive synonyms. The variety was first mentioned in 1644 in Emilia-Romagna and the wine was described as "spicy, elegant and very healthy". According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, it is a presumably natural cross between Crepallocchi x Schiava Grossa. It is a parent variety of Vintaghju. The medium to late ripening vine is susceptible to coulure and powdery mildew and is suitable as a wine grape and table grape. It is grown in Emilia-Romagna in the provinces of Modena, Ravenna and Reggio nell'Emilia. In 2016, 29 hectares of vines were reported, with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
