Urban Winery

Term for a new form of winery. This is derived from the fact that these farms are mostly located within a city or in an urban environment, i.e. not in a traditional rural setting near the vineyards. These may be far away, so the grapes have to be transported to the urban facility under appropriate conditions (refrigerated special transporters). In terms of business model, urban wineries often resemble craft beer breweries. Such operations first emerged in the USA in San Franciso, California. They were then followed by the cities of Cincinnati, Frederick, Los Angeles, Maryland, New York, Sacramento, Oregon, Portland, San Diego and Seattle, among others. The first German Urban Winery called IMI Winery was launched in Cologne.
