Name (also scion, scionwood, scion, upper part, graft, scion, brushwood) for the upper part of a vine with a bud (eye). This is grafted onto a rootstock during grafting. The scion alone determines the character of the new vine (grafted vine) and therefore also the quality of the wine made from it. The lower part (rootstock) "only" acts as a supplier of nutrients and water.
