The University of California is a state university system with ten campuses in the US state of California. These are the cities of Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz. The main campus is located in Berkeley in Alameda County on the mainland side of San Francisco Bay.

As early as 1880, the legislature decided to establish viticulture and oenology as branches of teaching and research. As the climate in Berkeley was unsuitable for practical experiments, the viticulture branch was moved to the city of Davis. The University of California, Davis (UC Davis, UCD or Davis) is the northernmost of the ten campuses and is considered one of the world's most important training and research centres in the field of viticulture and oenology. UC Davis has been shaping the development of the modern wine sector for more than a century, especially in California. The institution was founded in 1905 as University Farm and has been an independent campus of the University of California since 1959.

University of California in Davis - Arboretum

The administrative building "Mrak Hall" of the University of California at Davis, named after the scientist Emil M. Mrak, on the grounds of the Arboretum (botanical collection of trees and shrubs). The Arboretum is located along the banks of the old north channel of Putah Creek on the south side of campus and is approximately 100 acres (0.40 km² ) in size.
