to rinse with wine

Rinsing a wine vessel such as a drinking glass, jug or carafe with some wine (rinsing wine) before use. Ideally, the wine used for this is the same wine that you pour afterwards. This eliminates any unpleasant odours. These can come from the washing-up liquid, the cupboard in which the glass was stored, a surface on which the glass was standing upside down or from other sources in the environment. The glass is thus made "wine-friendly" or "wine-green". In professional tastings, rinsing the glass is often done with the next wine. Vinification has a completely different meaning.
