Tinto Cão

The red grape variety originates from Portugal; the name means "red dog", but the meaning is unknown. Synonyms are Castellana Negra, Farmento, Farnento, Teinta Cam, Tinta Cam, Tinta Cão, Tintilla Castellana and Tinto Cam. It should not be confused with the Padeiro variety (Tinto Cão) due to seemingly indicative synonyms or morphological similarities. The parentage is unknown. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2003, there could be a connection to the varieties Tinta Francisca and Viosinho. The variety was a crossing partner of the new variety Rubired as well as a parent of the variety Malvarisco, which was probably created by natural crossing.
