The red grape variety (also Benfica) is a new cross between Castelão Francês x Alicante Henri Bouschet according to DNA analyses carried out in 2020. The parentage Tintinha (Petit Bouschet) x João de Santarém (Castelão Francês) stated in the breeding list turned out to be wrong. The cross was made in Portugal in 1948 by the breeder José Leão Ferreira da Almeida. Incidentally, the Tinto de Pegoes and Valbom varieties were also created with the same parents. The variety is cultivated in the Portuguese region of Centro. In 2016, nine hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
