The red grape variety comes from Portugal
. Synonyms are Lobão, Preto Gordo and Tinta Carvalha du Douro. Although synonyms seem to indicate this, it should not be confused with the Rufete
variety. The late ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew
. It produces red wines that are not very colourful, low in alcohol and acid, with aromas of fruit. The variety is mainly present in the Douro
area, as well as Beiras
. In 2010, a cultivation area of 1,311 hectares was reported in Portugal.
