The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Carvalha, Lobão, Preto Gordo and Tinta Carvalha du Douro. Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms, it must not be confused with the Rufete variety. This late-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It produces red wines that are not very colourful, low in alcohol and acidity, and with fruity aromas. The variety is mainly present in the Douro area, as well as Beiras, Dão and Ribatejo. In 2016, 1,113 hectares of vines were reported in Portugal (Kym Anderson statistics).

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
