Tinta Carvalha

The red grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Lobão, Preto Gordo and Tinta Carvalha du Douro. Although synonyms seem to indicate this, it should not be confused with the Rufete variety. The late ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It produces red wines that are not very colourful, low in alcohol and acid, with aromas of fruit. The variety is mainly present in the Douro area, as well as Beiras, Dão and Ribatejo. In 2010, a cultivation area of 1,311 hectares was reported in Portugal.
