In 1979, the region of Extremadura in Spain was approved as a temporary DO provisional (VdlT). In 1999, the new DO Ribera del Guadiana was declared, which included Tierra de Barros (meaning "land of clay" or "clay/clay soils") as well as five other wine regions as subzones.
