Canton in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland with Bellinzona as its capital. It borders on Italy and is divided into two parts, Sopraceneri and Sottoceneri. The most southerly and scenically beautiful Swiss canton is also known as the "sun parlour of Switzerland" because of the many hours of sunshine. It is one of the six Swiss wine regions. The vineyards cover 1,028 hectares. As a special feature, the Misoxtal (Mesolcina), located in the canton Graubünden, is also included with 50 hectares. The climate is reminiscent of Mediterranean conditions, but there is high rainfall. The majority of the approximately 3,800 winegrowers own only small parcels of land and cultivate vines as a sideline. Well-known wine-growing communities are Biasca, Castel San Pietro, Chiasso, Giornico, Giubiasco, Gordola, Gudo, Malvaglia, Morbio, Morcote, Rivera, Rovio, Stabio, Tenero and Verscio. The best locations are between the lakes Lago Maggiore and Lago di Lugano, as well as Bellinzona and Locarno.
