Friedrich Wilhelm Petzsch founded the "Cognac Distillery Petzsch" in 1898, and the company has been based in Bingen since 1911. The company name had to be changed to "Weinbrennerei Scharlachberg GmbH" in 1919 due to the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles.
