Thermal

Term for the ascending air flow (updraft), which is caused by the solar radiation hitting the earth's surface and the resulting warming of the air on the ground. It plays an important role in viticulture. Optimal thermals are given in hillside locations, whereby the type of soil also plays a role as heat accumulator. See under climate and viticulture worthiness.
