Thelema Mountain

Thelema Mountain Vineyards is located on the Helshoogte Pass of the Simonsberg above the town of Stellenbosch in the South African wine-growing district of the same name. The name Thelema philosophically means "will". The former fruit farm was founded as a wine estate in 1983 by Gyles H. Webb and ranks among the best in the Cape region. The former accountant Webb previously studied viticulture and cellar technology at the University of Stellenbosch. Today, the estate is jointly owned by the founder and the McLean Family Trust. Webb was also involved in the foundation of the Spice Route wine estate (Swartland). In 1994, he was voted "Winemaker of the Year". The total estate comprises 155 hectares, of which 55 hectares are under vines. The vineyards are mostly situated on the steep slopes of the Simonsberg at an altitude of up to 500 metres above sea level. The varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz are cultivated. Premium wines of the house are "Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve" and a Merlot. Around 300,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
