Tenuta

Italian term (lat. tenere = to possess) for an estate that owns a large amount of land. The term is also a popular and frequently used part of a winery designation, which is usually prefixed. A tenuta often includes not only vineyards, but also olive groves, forests and other agricultural land.

The terms Château and Domaine (France), Estate (New World), Palácio (Portugal) and Schloss (German-speaking countries) have a special meaning in other countries. They are associated with a certain quality and tradition, which implies a high standard of wine production. In Italy, the closest equivalent is tenuta or podere.
