Swenson White

The white grape variety (also ES 6-1-43) is a complex interspecific new variety between Edelweiss x Elmer Swenson 442 (Minnesota 78 x Rubilande). It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in the early 1960s at the University of Minnesota by the grapevine breeder Elmer Swenson (1913-2004). Plant variety protection was granted in 1994. The late-maturing vine is moderately susceptible to both powdery mildew and anthracnose, but resistant to frost down to minus 35 °Celsius. It yields floral white wines with a light foxtone with good potential for late harvests and ice wines. The variety is also used as table grape. It is grown in the US states of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin, as well as in Canada (2 ha). In 2016, only the stocks in Canada were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
