The fruit or plant also known as Ahlkirsche, Eisenkirsche or Sumpfkirsche, or in Austria as Elexsen, Ölasn, Ölexen, Ösn or Öxn (lat. Prunus padus), belongs to the rose family. Two species are common and late flowering Sessile Cherry. The name is derived from the flowers and fruits arranged in clusters. The bird cherry grows as a shrub or tree three to fifteen metres high. The hermaphroditic, white blossoms stand in 10 to 15 centimetre long, initially arching, upright, later hanging 12 to 30 flowered racemes. It bears black fruits that taste bitter when raw. Jam and juices, and especially in Northern Europe often distillates, are made from these fruits. See also under brandy.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
