Swan Valley

Winegrowing area (GI) northeast of the city of Perth in the Australian state of Western Australia. It is a sub-area of Swan District and belongs to the zone Greater Perth. It is one of the hottest wine growing areas in Australia. The viticulture was influenced by Italian, Yugoslavian and English immigrants. The Olive Farm, founded in 1829 by Thomas Waters, is the oldest continuously operating winery in Australia. Around 1970, 90% of Western Australia's production volume was still made from grapes from the area, today it is only 15%. The vineyards cover about 250 hectares of vines. Mainly white wines from the varieties Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Muscadelle and Verdelho are produced. Important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The wines are often vinified as blend. Well-known producers are Jane Brook, Houghton Wines, Lamont, Olive Farm and Westfield.
