Sutter Home

The winery is located in St Helena in California's Napa Valley. It was founded in 1874 by John Thomann (1836-1900), an immigrant from Switzerland. After his death, the Leuenberger family took over the property and named it "Sutter Home". The name is presumably derived from Johann August Sutter (1803-1880), the famous Swiss pioneer and founder of Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, who became famous during the Californian gold rush.

Sutter Home - Viktorianisches Haus

Like so many wineries in Napa Valley, Sutter Home was closed during the American Prohibition (1920-1933) until it was bought by the brothers John and Mario Trinchero (1899-1981) in 1948. They renovated the winery and began producing simple barrel wines. For years, they sold the wine to neighbours in the Napa Valley. In 1968, Louis "Bob" Trinchero (1940-2021), Mario's eldest son, began vinifying Zinfandel from Amador County. In 1994, Wine Spectator honoured him for introducing more Americans to wine than anyone else in US winemaking history. Today, Sutter Home is part of the family business "Trinchero Family Estates" (TFE). Bob Torkelson serves as President & CEO.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
