The white grape variety probably originates from the eastern Mediterranean region. About 130 Synonym in many languages testify to the very high age and worldwide distribution of the vine. Origin & Ancestry

The exact origin is unclear; various sources have suggested the countries Afghanistan, Greece, Iran, South Africa, and Turkey. The Abstammung (of the possibly already extinct parents) is also unknown. According to Wine Grapes, the two varieties Kishmish Sorh (Sultanina Rouge) with reddish berries and Kishmish Chernyi (Sultanina Neagra) with black berries are somatic Mutation; however, this ancestry is not confirmed in the VIVC catalog.
