Colloquial term in the German-speaking area for the Alkoholismus. It derives from "Saufen" (excessive drinking). A "Suffkopp" or "Süffel" is a drinker (alcoholic). A more diminutive form is "Süffeln", which refers to "enjoyable drinking". A motivating, rather light wine for consumption is called süffig. See further designations under Rausch.
