Sucellus

The originally Celtic god (also Sucaleus, Sucellos, Sucelus) played a multifaceted role as the god of the forest, pastures, vineyards, fertility, intoxication, ecstasy and wealth, but also as the god of the dead and guardian. He was also equated with the Roman forest god Silvanus.

Sucullus - 3 Artefakte

Relation to wine

A statue of Sucellus was found in the Bouches-du-Rhône department (France) (pictured left). He is holding a pot or cup in his left hand and a long-handled mallet in his right hand. This could be the typical tools used by coopers. Other depictions of him show grapes, barrels and (presumably) a winemaker's knife. In one find, he is depicted standing on a barrel.
