An area brand category of the Lower Austrian winegrowers' association Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus for dry white wines. There are three levels in total: Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd. The feathery grass Steinfeder (lat. stipa pennata), which grows like edelweiss on rocks near the terraced vineyards of the Wachau, gave the symbolic name. The light, fragrant and sparkling wines must have a must weight of 15 to 17°KMW and (since the 2007 vintage) a maximum alcohol content of 11.5% by volume. The category gave the Steinfeder Award its name.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
