According to Greek mythology one of the two sons of the wine god Dionysus with Ariadne (the second son was Oinopion). According to another version, the mother was Erigone, daughter of Icario, whose chastity the god outwitted in the form of a grape. When Erigone consumed it, she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, which she named Staphylus (Staphyl = grape) in memory of his birth. Out of grief over the early death of her father she hanged herself. According to a third version, Staphylus was a shepherd of King Oineus, whom he taught to make wine after he was the first to find the grapevine.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
