Today's training and experimental farm is located in the municipality of Oppenheim ( Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. The wine-growing domain was founded in 1900 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein (1868-1937) and at that time covered 83 hectares. The Grand Ducal School of Fruit and Viticulture, based in Oppenheim, was established on his initiative as early as 1895. The first director from 1902 to 1933 was Heinrich Fuhr (1870-1958). This German winegrowing pioneer founded a vine protection service in 1907, which became a model for all German winegrowing regions.

Large-scale propagation of American rootstocks began and the famous SO 4 rootstock was created. This subsequently developed into one of the most popular rootstocks in German viticulture. Improved viticultural techniques were also introduced. In 1976, the areas of the dissolved wine-growing domain administration in Mainz were taken over. Finally, in 1992, the former state winery and the former wine-growing domain were merged to form today's Oppenheim wine-growing domain. Since 2000, the domain has been managed by Otto Schätzel; the administrator is Gunter Schenkel and the cellar master is Thorsten Eller.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
