Spieß

single vineyard (also spelled Spiess) in the municipality of Ruppertsberg (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. At a stone cross in the middle of the adjacent Reiterpfad site, the path forks in a southwesterly and westerly direction, so that the parcels behind the cross have a spike-shaped form. This pointed area was described as early as around 1400 as "an dem Spisz". The south-facing vineyard at 155 to 160 metres above sea level with a 15% slope covers five hectares of vines. The soil consists mainly of permeable red sandstone rubble with interspersed portions of clayey sand and loess loam. The water storage capacity is low. The Riesling variety is cultivated here. The Bassermann-Jordan and Christmann Arnold wineries, for example, have shares in the site.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
