Spiegel (Riede Österreich)

Common term for vineyards or sites in the German-speaking world. The name is derived from "to reflect" - the areas were specially prepared and levelled for better cultivation. A second interpretation is "that the sun is reflected in the vineyard" and thus has particularly good sunlight (exposure). In a third interpretation, the name is derived from the Old High German "spekulare", which means "good/wide view". There are 17 vineyards in Austria with this name or with "Spiegel" as part of the name.

Gedersdorf - Kremstal (Lower Austria)

The south-facing vineyards cover 9 hectares of vines at 202 to 256 metres above sea level with a slope of 0 to 29°. The calcareous soil consists of loess or loess-loam with a loamy texture and is rather dry. The Grüner Veltliner (70%), Riesling, Zweigelt, Muscat and Pinot Blanc varieties are cultivated here. The Berger Erich, Eder Martin and Müllner Johann wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyard.
