Spiced wine

flavoured wine (GB)

Wine flavoured or modified in taste by the addition of seasoning substances. In the past, such wines were produced not only to improve the taste, but also to extend the shelf life. Examples of this are the Piperatum (pepper wine), already known in Roman antiquity, the Hypocras from the Middle Ages, the Italian Marsala, the Greek Retsina (resin) and the Wormwood (plant extracts). See also in detail under aromatising and special wines.
