The winery is located in the municipality of Sommerhausen (Maindreieck area) in the German wine growing region of Franconia. It was already founded in 1435 by Schenk Konrad IV of Limpurg (1396-1482). As the "cellarey" of the Holy Roman Empire's "Erbschenken", the coronation wines of German kings and emperors were produced here for centuries. The Steinmann family acquired the old castle estate in 1968 and renovated it true to the original. The roots of the family go back to the year 1537. The castle, built in 1435, serves mainly as a picturesque backdrop for all kinds of festivities. The wine production is relocated to a newly built cellar building on the outskirts of the village. Today the business is managed by Martin Steinmann in the 15th generation.
The vineyards comprise 20 hectares of vineyards in the individual locations Kapellenberg (Eibelstadt), Sonnenstuhl (Randersacker), as well as Reifenstein and Steinbach (Sommerhausen). The white wine varieties are Silvaner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Muskateller, Bacchus,Pinot Blanc, Rieslaner, Auxerrois,Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer, the bouquet vine reactivated by the winery and the Blue Silvaner, discovered and selected by Johann Kaspar Steinmann in 1964. The red wine varieties arePinot Noir, Domina and Frühburgunder. Since 2011, the vineyards have been cultivated ecologically and sustainably. Production and sales are carried out according to the certified rules of Fair'n Green.
In the winery's assortment there are three main focuses: aroma, terroir and sparkling wine. In accordance with the VDP classification model, the product range is divided into Grosse Lage, Erste Lage and estate wines. The white wines are aged in stainless steel tanks, the red wines mature in French barrique barrels. Selected estate wines are processed into bottle-fermented sparkling wines, which are stored for three years on the yeast in the historic sparkling wine cellar dating from 1435. The premium products of the house are the VDP.Grosse Gewächse (Silvaner and Riesling) from the Steinbach-Alttenberg 1172 site, as well as Le Grand Blanc, Le Grand Rosé and Le Grand Riesling sparkling wines with year designation. The noble sweet rarities are stored in the treasure chamber until the optimal moment of consumption. Various noble brandies are also produced, some of which mature in small oak barrels. Around 10,000 bottles of sparkling wine from the "avec pläsier line" are produced annually (Burgundy cuvée, Riesling, rosé). The winery is a member of the associations or federations Fair'n Green, VDP and Weinbauring Franken.
