Largest wine production company in Portugal, with ownership of wineries located in the wine-growing regions of Alentejo (Vinha do Monte), Bairrada (Quinta d'Aguieira), Dão (Quinta dos Carvalhais), Douro (Ferreira) and Vinho Verde (Quinta de Avelada, Quinta do Azevedo). The vineyards cover a total of 1,400 hectares. Sogrape is majority-owned by the Guedes family, whose winegrowing tradition dates back to the 17th century. One of their ancestors was a viceroy in India. Its rise began in 1942, when Fernando van Zeller-Guedes founded the company and on the family estate Quinta de Avelada (120 hectares) created the most successful and best-selling wine Mateus in Portugal today. Sogrape is also the largest producer of Vinho Verde. A wide range of branded wines are produced, mostly from local grape varieties. The best known are Barca Velha, Duque de Viseu (red wine), Gazela (Vinho Verde), Grão Vasco (red and white wine), Morgadio de Torre (Vinho Verde). The property also includes the port wine companies Ferreira, Offley and Sandeman.
