Single Christian

The winegrower Christian Single (1816-1869), who came from a family of winegrowers, was a municipal councillor in Stuttgart from 1851 to 1869. Among other things, he was co-founder of the Urbania Vocal Society of Vintners in Stuttgart, committee member of the Society for Wine Improvement in Württemberg, member of the Agricultural District Society in Stuttgart, 1st chairman of the Stuttgart Estate Owners' Association with responsibility for a model vineyard, and hiking instructor for wine-growing districts in Württemberg. From 1852 onwards, viticultural information trips took him to the Rhine and Moselle, and from 1857 to southwestern Switzerland, Lake Geneva, Tyrol and Austria. From 1862 he held the position of an expert for viticulture in the Königl. Centralstelle für Landwirtschaft in Württemberg. From 1866 he was appointed to the 1st Board of Directors of the Königl.-Wttbg. Weinbauschule in Weinsberg. After a visit to August-Wilhelm Freiherr von Babo (1827-1894) in Klosterneuburg near Vienna, the school of viticulture was opened in Weinsberg in 1868. Single acquired extensive practical knowledge and rendered great services to the care and improvement of viticulture and grape breeding in Württemberg.
