single vineyard In the municipality of Hattenheim, in the German wine-growing region of the Rheingau, at the western entrance to the village. The name suggests a guard’s hut, which was intended to provide shelter from inclement weather for the ‘Traubeschütz’ (vineyard guard) in autumn. The vineyard keeper would use an alarm pistol to scare away the starlings and other birds that fed on the grapes. The long, narrow vineyard stretches a short distance to the west, which protects it from cold easterly winds.

The vineyards, which face mainly south to south-west at an altitude of 100 to 150 metres above sea level and have a gradient of just 10 per cent, cover 58 hectares of vineyard area. The deep, variegated slate soils, mixed with loess and loess-loam, possess a high water-retention capacity. The main varieties cultivated here are Riesling and Pinot Noir. The vineyards are owned, for example, by the Barth, Bausch Hans, Georg Müller Foundation and Ress Balthasar estates.
