The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Lambrusco Sgavetta, Schiradzuoli Blanc, Sganetta and Sgavetta a Graspo Rosso. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Coccalona Nera x unknown partner. The medium to late ripening vine is generally well resistant to fungal diseases. It produces colourful red wines, which are mostly used as colour-enhancing blends. The variety was first mentioned in 1877 by the ampelographer Giuseppe di Rovasenda (1824-1913). It is grown in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia in the Emilia-Romagna region and is permitted in the DOC wine Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa as well as in Balsamico. In 2016, 26 hectares of vines were reported with a decreasing trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
