semi-sweet

Designation for a certain content of residual sugar in the wine. It applies when the value exceeds the value valid for semi-dry (12 g/l or depending on the acidity 18 g/l), but does not exceed 45 g/l = sweet. Since Austria's accession to the EU in 1995, the German term "halbsüß" (semi-sweet), which had been used until then, has been banned; instead, medium sweet is used (as it has always been in Germany ). However, "semidulce" in Spain, "medium sweet" in English-speaking countries and "meio doce" in Portugal are very permissible. See all names and flavours under sugar content.
