The winery is located in the municipality of Traiskirchen in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region Thermenregion. It has been run by the seventh generation of the family for over 200 years. After his apprenticeship at Klosterneuburg, Andreas Schafler and his wife Catherina took over the business in 1993. A wine tavern is attached. A new pressing hall was put into operation in 2006. The vineyards cover nine hectares in the Achkogel, Igeln, Kreuzer, Mandelhöhe, Pfarrgarten and Tümpfel vineyards. They are planted with the white wine varieties Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, and the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Laurent, Merlot and Zweigelt. Natural viticulture is practised with cover crop using a clover-grass mixture and predatory mites for pest control. The wines are vinified in the lines "Klassik" (steel tank fermentation, dry and acidic) and "Lagenweine" (higher extract and partly barrique ageing). The premium wines include the Zweigelt Achkogel, Chardonnay Tümpfel, Rotgipfler Pfarrgarten, Zierfandler Pfarrgarten and Mandelhöhe-Cuvée (white), as well as the red wine cuvée Igeln (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) aged in barriques. In years when the weather is suitable, ice wines, straw wines and Trockenbeerenauslesen are also pressed. Vinegar, frizzante, sparkling wine (Zierfandler) and grape marc brandy are also produced.
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
