Satzenberg

single vineyard in the municipality of Reicholzheim (Tauberfranken area) in the German wine-growing region of Baden. It is one of the oldest vineyards in Germany, as viticulture was already practised here in the 8th century. The spelling "Zathzenberg" at that time indicates a former owner knight "Zazo". The first documented mention of the vineyard dates back to 1318. After several changes of ownership, the Bronnbach Monastery became the sole owner in the 16th century. In 1803, the Satzenberg became the property of the Löwenstein princes, who marketed the wines from here until the 2008 vintage. Since spring 2009, the vineyard has belonged to the newly founded Alte Grafschaft winery, represented by Christoph Dinkel and Norbert Spielmann. The vineyard, which faces south-southeast and is terraced with 16 kilometres of dry-stone walls on a slope with a gradient of 25 to 40%, comprises eight hectares of vines on soils with red sandstone. However, only one hectare each is planted with Pinot Blanc and Riesling.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
