Sartorius Otto

Dr. Otto Sartorius (1892-1977) studied natural sciences in Heidelberg and Montpellier and received his doctorate in 1926 on the physiology of vine blossom (see under blossom). From 1911 until his death, he managed the Herrenhof vineyard, the oldest in the Palatinate. In almost 40 publications he dealt with the flowering of the vine and other questions of vine breeding. He was the first to describe the rule known as the Quantity-Good-Law of the relationship between yield and quality based on many years of research on offspring of the Silvaner variety. He also conducted many studies on leaf and wood development, soil science and vine protection. Starting in 1946, Sartorius was a lecturer at the University of Mainz, giving lectures on the cultural and economic significance of viticulture. He was a re-founder and co-founder of the Winegrowers' Association of the Rhineland Palatinate and the German Winegrowers' Association. In addition, he was chairman of the Committee for Grafted Vine Cultivation and Phylloxera Control for many years. The DLG (German Agricultural Society) awarded him the Bassermann Jordan Medal and the Federal Republic of Germany the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class.
