DOC area (also Sangue di Giuda) for red wine in the Italian region of Lombardy. The name part "Sangue di Giuda" means "Judas' blood" and refers to its ruby red colour. According to legend, the apostle Judas came to this area. At first, the winegrowers wanted to kill him because of his betrayal of Jesus. But after he had cured their vines of a disease, the wine was named after him out of gratitude. Previously included in the Oltrepò Pavese DOC area, the wine was classified as an independent area in 2010. The zone includes areas of the municipalities of Bosnasco, Cigognola, Montù Beccaria and Pietra de' Giorgi in the province of Pavia. The sweet wine is made from the varieties Barbera (25-65%), Croatina (25-65%), Uva Rara and/or Ughetta = Vespolina and/or Pinot Nero = Pinot Nero (max. 45%). There are the types Tranquillo (still wine), Frizzante (semi-sparkling wine) and Spumante. Fermentation is stopped at 5.5 to 7% alcohol by volume to give the tannin-rich wine a sweetness. The total alcohol content must be 12% vol.
